What are the basic processes in sheet metal manufacturing industry?

2025-02-19

In modern manufacturing, sheet metal processing plays an important role, from medical equipment to electronic chassis. Let’s take a closer look at the basic processes of sheet metal manufacturing.

Programming

Programming is the first step in sheet metal processing and a crucial link. According to the design drawings, technicians convert processing parameters, paths and other information into instruction codes that can be recognized by the machine tool. In laser sheet metal processing, accurate programming can ensure that the laser beam cuts according to the preset trajectory, improving cutting accuracy and efficiency. The accuracy of the programming link directly affects the smooth progress of subsequent processes.

Punching / Cutting

Punching and cutting are processes for processing sheets into specific shapes. CNC punching machines are often used for batch punching of simple-shaped sheets. In sheet metal chassis processing, they can quickly punch out the mounting holes of the chassis side panels. Laser cutting, with its high precision, is competent for cutting complex shapes. In medical sheet metal processing, such as manufacturing precision medical instrument housings, laser cutting can perfectly cut various fine contours, with smooth cuts and almost no secondary processing.

Deburring

Burrs will be generated on the edge of the sheet after punching or cutting, and the deburring process is indispensable. These burrs not only affect the appearance of the product, but may also cause scratches in subsequent processes and affect the assembly accuracy. Removing burrs by grinding, chemical treatment and other methods can make the surface of the sheet smooth and flat, laying a good foundation for subsequent processing.

Bending

Bending is a key step in giving sheet metal products a three-dimensional shape. The operator adjusts the parameters of the bending machine according to the material, thickness and design requirements of the sheet to bend the sheet into a specific angle. In the processing of sheet metal chassis, the bending accuracy determines the dimensional accuracy and overall quality of the chassis. Sheets of different materials have different bending characteristics. For example, stainless steel sheets require greater pressure when bending, and attention should be paid to the rebound problem. It often takes multiple debugging to ensure the bending effect.

Welding

Welding is the process of connecting multiple sheet metal parts into a complete structure. In medical sheet metal processing, argon arc welding is a common method for some medical equipment with high requirements for sealing. It uses argon as a protective gas, which can effectively isolate the air, make the weld beautiful and firm, and meet the high standards of medical equipment. Resistance welding is often used to connect sheet metal parts of electronic equipment due to its fast welding speed.

Finishing (including surface treatment)

Surface treatment is an important process to improve the corrosion resistance and aesthetics of sheet metal products. Spray painting is widely used in sheet metal chassis processing. It can provide protection for the chassis and meet different aesthetic needs. For example, server chassis often use black spray paint, which is both beautiful and wear-resistant. Electroplating is used for parts that require conductivity and wear resistance. By plating a metal layer, its performance is enhanced.

Assembly

Assembly is the process of combining sheet metal parts that have undergone a series of processing into the final product. In this process, it is necessary to ensure that the installation position of the parts is accurate and the connection is firm. Whether it is sheet metal chassis processing or medical sheet metal processing, accurate assembly can ensure the normal use of the product.

These processes in the sheet metal manufacturing industry are closely linked, and each step affects the quality of the product. Only by controlling each process can we produce high-quality products in the fields of laser sheet metal processing, medical sheet metal processing, sheet metal chassis processing, etc. to meet market demand.
